This series is too harsh. At several points I almost stopped the process (foul language over the top, prostitution and its wreckage, mob butchery at the corner store, seduction and destruction of a young male guard in a women's prison).
It portrays a town enmeshed in the dynamics and hate of its various prisons. The Mayor is one of three brothers. They constantly ride the delicate territory of making deals inside and outside the institution. Deals that affect street gangs of Michigan, incarcerated and desperate men and women, families, employees and businesses (including the smoother operations of the Mob).
Jeremy Renner is number two son. He is catapulted into the position of mayor. His younger brother "Kyle" is a city cop, and his Mother's favourite. " In the consummate prison riot, he is driven into hiding within the bowels of the fortress. Can he be rescued along with the Captain Cop, played by the co-producer of the series, Hugh Dillon. And played very well.
Great drama. Great opportunities for faces and movements to speak louder than words of script.
A young girl Iris, harboured eventually by Renner, and asking the question. Can a soul start to grow back again? Can a City? Can an institutional process? Can ravaged consciences?
In one of the DVD special features I learned that the Co-producer had been raised in Kingston Ontario (ie. Kingstown). A Canadian city of middle size spotted with numerous prisons. Dillon and Taylor Sheridan shared many of these ideas/dreams/plot lines years before any of the YELLOWSTONE phenomenon with Kevin Costner. But the time was not right, the ideas requiring larger refinement and force.
I also learned that Sheridan had enjoyed working with Renner in the film WIND RIVER. And Renner the same.
